The old Big Lots space at Hudson River Commons has been sitting vacant since late last year, and with how congested that area already is, people have been curious.

A new Crunch Fitness is set to open there in 2026. It’ll be a huge 37,000-square-foot gym, making it the third Crunch location in the Capital Region and the 11th in New York State for the franchisee. This same group is also behind the Crunch that’s being built at Crossgates Mall.

The Troy location is expected to open sometime in the second quarter of 2026, according to the Albany Business Review. Crunch is known for its affordable memberships that start at around $10 a month and its mix of group classes, machines, and free weights.

Crunch Fitness representatives say the Hoosick Street site made sense because it sits at the base of the hill, making it easily accessible without being a total headache to get to. Still, anyone familiar with that stretch knows traffic is already a bit of a challenge.

Crunch has more than 600 gyms around the world and over 3 million members. And with this latest deal signed, it looks like the Capital Region might be seeing more of them. They are looking at Clifton Park and Saratoga in the future.
