Massachusetts DOT Plans On Updating Albany To Boston Connection
I love taking the train to new York City. It's so easy to just hop on at Albany-Rensselaer Station and take a quick 2 and a half hour ride into the Big Apple.
Unfortunately, it's not as simple getting to Boston, which is a similar journey, but Massachusetts is looking at options to help make it much easier.
Compass Rail
Much like New York's Empire Rail, Massachusetts has Compass Rail. It's a statewide train service that occasionally connects out of state to make traversing the Commonwealth of Massachusetts a breeze.
As of now, Washington, D.C., St. Albans, VT, and New Haven, CT are the only major out-of-state cities that have access to this rail service, but the Massachusetts Department of Transportation is working around the clock on their new 'East-West' rail service.

East-West Rail Service
One of these proposed routes is the Boston & Albany Corridor, which is a route that's seen some troubles in recent months. After the Amtrak service was cut for a few months, it's finally back on the line, but the Compass Rail plan will make traversal between the two cities even easier.
On October 6th, 2026, the MassDOT will host a public meeting about the development of the new East-West rail lines, hoping to see how they can improve travel between Boston and Albany.
The meeting will be held on Zoom from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and a recording of the meeting will be uploaded to the project website at its conclusion.
