2024 got off to a shaky start in New York State as many residents felt a bit of a rumble and a few individuals even heard loud noises similar to explosions. According to the New York Times, what certain parts of the Empire State experienced was an earthquake.

The Northeast States Emergency Consortium (NESEC) reports that New York State has experienced nearly 600 earthquakes in it's history dating back to the 1700's. Did you feel the latest?

The Unites States Geological Survey (USGS) indicates that there have been a few earthquakes reported around the world as we transitioned from 2023 to 2024. Indonesia on December 30th, China on December 31st, California on January 1st, Japan on January 1st and Washington D.C. on January 2nd. Now we can add New York State to the list.

Just before 6am on Tuesday January 2nd some New Yorkers woke to the sounds of small explosions but no power outages.

The Associated Press revealed that 1.7 magnitude earthquake rattled parts of New York City on Tuesday January 2nd at 5:45am between Manhattan and Queens. The explosions that were heard are believed to be caused by the earthquake but Con Edison shows no loss of power.

Typically a 1.7 magnitude earthquake goes unnoticed but authorities suspect this was closer to the surface creating a noticeable impact. The largest earthquake recorded in New York took place in 1944 near Massena, NY and registered 5.9 magnitude.
