For the first 5.2 innings of the New York Yankees' game on Monday, the main story was the performance of Carlos Rodon.

Rodon, who signed with New York ahead of the 2023 season, was outstanding on Monday afternoon, striking out five batters while not allowing a single hit in his outing against Philadelphia.

Here's a bit of proof of how well he was pitching:

With one out in the top of the sixth inning, Rodon induced a lazy fly ball to left field, which was caught easily by Alex Verdugo.

Then, as the catch was made, time was called, and someone emerged from the Yankees' dugout. Fans probably expected to see Aaron Boone, New York's current-day manager, stroll out to the mound to remove Rodon from the game.

That expectation would've been wrong, and they never could've guessed that this would happen instead:

Onto the field stepped Joe Torre, the long-time Yankees' manager, and the winner of 2,326 games as a manager, fifth-most in MLB history.

Fans cheered loudly, and for multiple reasons. Of course, they were seeing the all-too-familiar walk to the mound being made by a New York legend, which is incredible on its own.

Also, they were watching Torre take the ball from Rodon, who fans expect big things from this season, and who had pitched tremendously that day.

Across the board, it was a moment of celebration for New York Yankees' fans. Here were some of our favorite posts shared by Yankees' fans on X:

And, to answer your question, no, Joe Torre did not call for Paul Quantrill to come out of the New York bullpen, as much as he may have wanted to.
