Ten ‘Traitors’ Who Played Both Sides of New York-Boston Baseball Rivalry
Breaking news: the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox do not like each other.
Players don't like players, fans don't like fans, coaches don't like coaches...simply put, you won't find a person, or group of people, from one of the teams who enjoy being around someone from the other. It's one of the best, more historic rivalries in all of sports, and the metaphorical flame still burns hot in 2023.
With all of that in mind, could you IMAGINE defecting from one side of the rivalry to the other during your career? A handful of brave players have actually done that.
The most recent example is outfielder Alex Verdugo, whom the Red Sox traded to the Yankees earlier this week. Verdugo will become the latest in a relatively short line of players who have infamously worn both Yankees' and Red Sox colors during their career.
Granted, Verdugo didn't choose to be dealt to the Yankees, but when he steps out onto the field in pinstripes on Opening Day, the visual will still take a bit of getting used to.
Let's explore this topic a bit further, and run through a list of other players who have played for both the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. No one player fits that criteria better Babe Ruth, a player whose move from team-to-team set off this century-long rivalry.
Here are a few players, including The Babe, who were brave enough to switch sides from Yankees to Red Sox, or vice versa, during their professional baseball career.
