‘Dime-less’ New York Giants Have a $40 Million Decision to Make This Week
The New York Giants officially have a problem on their hands.
Sunday night, the New York Giants played the Buffalo Bills, and with starting QB Daniel Jones ruled out due to a neck injury, backup Tyrod Taylor was given the start by Brian Daboll and the coaching staff. Taylor didn't light up the scoreboard by any stretch of the imagination, but he did something that a Giants' QB has rarely done in 2023.
He competed, and he kept his team in the game from the first whistle, to the last. That's something that Giants' fans cannot say about Daniel Jones, and leads us to ask this question: who should start at QB for New York next weekend?
New York Giants May Have a QB Competition Brewing Heading into Week 7
As a fan of the New York Giants, and a known Daniel Jones apologist, it kills me to even write this article. That said, it's a question that needs to be discussed. Tyrod Taylor operated the New York Giants' offense in a far more efficient manner than Daniel Jones has all season long, and deserves consideration to start this coming weekend against Washington.
Miraculously, the Giants' offensive line held their own against the league's best pass rush yesterday. That happened despite the Giants being down multiple starters, and losing Joshua Ezeudu part-way through the game.
In place of him, Justin Pugh played left tackle for a) the first time in his career, and b) after sitting out an entire season while rehabbing an injury. Yet, Tyrod Taylor not only didn't get killed, but he also managed to move the offense down the field on multiple drives during the game.
It could be a coincidence that the O-line performed well without Jones behind center, but then again, it may not be. He can be very erratic under center, and can take a lot of time to go through his progressions.
As one would expect, though, Giants' head coach Brian Daboll threw water on this particular fire during his media availability on Monday:
That's the right answer to that question (publicly), and I give him credit for answering the question in a definitive manner. The last thing the Giants, Jones, Daboll and/or Taylor need is even more of a media frenzy around the team than is already present on a weekly basis.
Regardless of how Brian Daboll answered the question today, I do believe that the answer is not as cut-and-dry as he makes it seem.
Yes, Daniel Jones is your starter, and was paid $40 million per season for his services this offseason. In order to get something out of Jones as your QB, even if it's a clear indication that he's not your starter in the years to come, you must play him as soon as he's healthy, and keep him in no matter what.
That being said, the Giants have three games in a row in which they won't be considered massive underdogs: home vs. the Commanders, home vs. the Jets, and on the road at the Raiders. If the team desperately wants to win these games, and climb their way back into relevancy in the NFC, then you have to play the best QB on your roster each week.
For the time being, it may not be Tyrod Taylor, but it's not definitely Daniel Jones, either.

For now, however, all we can do is wait.
