Man Allegedly Tries to Pass Fake $50 at Dunkin’ in Upstate New York
An Upstate New York man has been arrested after allegedly trying to use fake cash at a local Dunkin’ Donuts.
Technology has made a lot of things better in today’s world, right? We have smartphones, online banking, GPS, and just about every piece of information we could ever want right at our fingertips. All good things, but on the flip side, it has also made some counterfeit money almost impossible to identify.
Thankfully, an observant worker at a Dunkin’ has assisted police in arresting someone who was allegedly attempting to pass fake cash.
Counterfeit Cash Passed at Dunkin' in Oneonta, NY
A man from Troy, NY, is facing several charges after New York State Police say an investigation into a counterfeit $50 bill at a Dunkin’ Donuts eventually led to a traffic stop, an alleged impaired driver, and even more fake money.

According to the New York State Police, this whole thing started around 8 a.m. Monday, September 14, at the Dunkin’ Donuts on NY-23 in the Town of Oneonta, NY. Police say an individual went through the drive-thru and attempted to pay for an order with a $50 bill.
There was just one problem.
The employee apparently took a closer look at the bill and questioned whether it was actually real. Once the employee did that, police say the individual drove away from the drive-thru without taking any items.

The employee contacted police, who began an investigation and were able to get a description of the vehicle, a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee, along with the license plate number and a description of the person behind the wheel.
Suspect Spotted by Police
Several hours later, two troopers were on Main Street in the hamlet of Schenevus when they spotted a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee speeding through a school zone. Police say the vehicle and driver matched the description from the earlier Dunkin’ investigation.
That led to a traffic stop.
While speaking with the driver, troopers say they noticed characteristics consistent with impairment. The driver, who was identified as 29-year-old Kashawn K. Miller of Troy, was then asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which police say indicated impairment.

Then police say they found even more during the arrest, uncovering two additional counterfeit $50 bills, along with scales containing suspected drug residue.
Miller was charged with three counts of Possession of a Forged Instrument in the First Degree, a Class C felony. He was also charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle While Impaired by Drugs and Criminally Using Drug Paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.
Miller was processed and transported to the Otsego County Jail for centralized arraignment. If there has been a change to this information, such as charges being dropped or dismissed, please email me at CJ@Hudsonvalleycountry.com to make the necessary change.
