The man who gave us the big hit "Drift Away" in the 70's, Dobie Gray has passed away at the age of 71. No cause of death has been given at this time.

Gray's first success on the charts was a tune called "The In-Crowd" which peaked at #13 in 1965. But the tune he will forever be known for is 1973's "Drift Away" that crossed over all musical genres. I remember when I was younger hearing the song on GNA.  At one time before the success of  "Drift Away", Gray was a country songwriter who had songs recorded by the likes of Charlie Pride and Tammy Wynette.

The song of course got a rejuvination in 2003, when Uncle Kracker recorded a version which featured Gray himself.

The song has been covered by many in the past and I can't tell you how many concerts I have gone to where someone has broken this song out.

This song will certainly live forever!  In my personal opinion, it is one of the greatest songs of all time! RIP Dobie.
