New York May Ban Hair Care And Makeup Products Amidst Health Concerns
We, as a species, got along for centuries without caring about appearance and hygiene. Obviously, that's changed greatly over the past few decades, and now cosmetics and hair care are necessary for modern life.
New York may end that with a new act that targets those cosmetics...

Beauty Justice Act
The act was initially proposed in 2019, asking for regulation of ingredients in personal care and cosmetic products. According to State Law, these are defined as personal items used to clear hair or skin. This would no apply to medication or products requiring a prescription.
Specifically, it bans manufacturers from using certain chemicals in their products. Those chemicals are:
- Arsenic
- Asbestos
- Benzene
- Lead (DEC will restrict at “the lowest level that can feasibly be achieved”, and update every five years)
- Mercury
- PFAS
- Isobutylparaben
- Isopropylparaben
- Orthophthalates
These chemicals have been linked to asthma, allergies, hormone disruption, neurodevelopmental problems, infertility, and cancer. Obviously, not a good sign.
Why This is Important
The U.S. is lacking in the department. Both the European Union and Canada both have massive blacklists of chemicals that should not be used in personal care products, and over 40 countries, including Cambodia and Vietnam, have stricter regulations than the United States. That's why New York is so focused on setting an example for the other 49.
If passed, the Act would go into effect in 2030, banning products that use those harmful chemicals. The New York State Departments of Health and Conservation has until January 1st, 2029 to find safer alternatives that manufacturers can use as opposed to those harmful chemicals.
