A couple of people that had guns were trying to enter the Alden Hall SUNY-Albany dorm room, but because of a newer emergency alert system, students and employees were notified rather quickly that there was a lock down, and to remain inside.

The fairly new electronic system also alerted people on the College Of St. Rose, Albany campus about the gunmen situation, too.

The old way that any alerts were sent out were by resident assistants went door to door. With the new system, anyone on campus that signed up for the service got an almost immediate alert through email, text message or phone call. This was in addition to the old way.

The gunmen didn’t stay around long. They left the dorm room area within an hour. The new system then notified everyone that everything was fine, and the situation was over. Do you think this kind of system could be valuable in other places, too?
