Abandoned Since the 90s, Check Out this Montgomery Co Junkyard
This is quite the fascinating abandoned site. It's not just a pair of buildings, but 2 acres of scrap and junk that's been sitting dormant since approximately 1993.
This is the site of the old Nathan's Waste and Paper Stock Company. There's not a lot of history on the site, but a 2021 article in the Amsterdam Recorder said it operated as a junkyard from 1971 to 1993. It's located along the Erie Canal on Erie Terrace in Amsterdam and has sat vacant and decaying ever since it closed.
The city eventually took over the property in 2010. Shortly after a Schenectady couple bought the land with the hope of redeveloping it. Due to the amount of waste that has built up over the years, there are all kinds of chemicals in the soil that would require a pretty significant cleanup, though there has been talk about making that happen.
Until then, the property sits as it was, with junkpiles and two deteriorating buildings. Still, as we see inside, it's one of those buildings where history froze. There is still furniture, lots of paperwork dating in the 80s and 90s, and lots of junk. Of course, nature has taken its toll on the buildings as well as some damage by vandals and graffiti artists.
