2025 was a brutal year for retail closings in the Capital Region, across New York, and nationwide.

A long list of national retailers like Rite Aid, TD Bank, Dollar GeneralJOANN, and more all revealed closings in New York State.

Economics is always at play, but a major reason so many brick-and-mortar locations have closed over the last few years is the shift of more shopping and commerce to an online model. Consumers are simply utilizing the convenience of the internet for basic shopping and banking needs. This shift also applies to entertainment in the streaming universe, including for video gamers.

Game Stop Closes 9 More NY Stores, 2 In The Capital Region

According to a report from New York Upstate (NYUP), popular video game retailer GameStop has closed nine more New York locations. These include 2 Capital Region locations in Amsterdam and Hudson. The NYUP report says stores in Depew, Evans Mills, Herkimer, Monticello, Poughkeepsie, Victor, and Webster have also shut down as part of a company-wide "optimization review." These are in addition to several other Empire State GameStop locations that closed in 2025.

The good news is, unlike many other retailers, GameStop remains in business and still has a big footprint nationwide and in New York state, with several other Capital Region locations in Clifton Park, Schenectady, and Albany according ot the GameStop website.

Like everything else, gaming has become more accessible without leaving the home, as more and more entertainment is streamed into households.

New York Chains Closing Locations In 2025

After so many closings were announced in 2024, several more national and regional retail and bank chains have revealed New York locations will close in 2025.
