Rangers Make During Rescue on ADK High Peak
According to Adirondack Mountain News, the daring rescue occurred on Monday, August 5th, when they got a call about a hiker with a leg injury at the junction of Wright and Algonquin peaks.
The source says that Forest Ranger Rooney contacted the injured young man, a 15-year-old from Pennsylvania, and determined that he had a broken leg. The injury presented an incredible challenge to Forest Rangers, and it was all hands on deck during the painstaking rescue.
In addition to Rooney, eleven additional Rangers hiked in to begin the two-mile carry-out in treacherous, steep, and very rocky conditions.
Rangers splinted the subject’s leg and packaged him into a litter using a backpack system for carry-out. After about five hours of medical attention, at 9:20 p.m., the group reached Adirondak Loj, where the hiker was reunited with his father, who took him for further medical attention.
Algonquin Peak is a mountain in the MacIntyre Range of the Adirondacks in New York. At 5,114 feet, it is the second-highest mountain in New York and one of the 46 Adirondack High Peaks.
