When it comes to the game of cornhole, my skill level can be described as ... a good drinker that makes people laugh with his throwing motion. Not exactly inspiring confidence is it? So when I was asked to write up some tips to improve your cornhole game I immediately turned to a friend of mine that is a good player ... and a story in Esquire Magazine on how to be a better cornhole player. Hopefully, these tips will help you win in the Budweiser Folds Of Honor Cornhole Tournament Sept. 28.

My friend, Scott Willenborg, who is not only a good player, but has been a Cornhole Tournament Coordinator for several years had this tip, "I always try to get plenty of arc on a throw. Too many people rely on sliding into the cornhole for the three-point payday and slide right off the board. If I arc onto the board I have the same chance of hitting the hole and sliding a bit...but staying on the board for at least one point."

Another thing that helps is to relax ... this is where a couple of ice cold Buds come in handy. If you're stiff and tense you'll never have a fluid-throwing motion.

Another tip, and this one is totally different than how I used to throw a bag, mash it flat put a spin on the bag almost like a Frisbee....flat with rotation. This took me some serious practice to figure out. I was a scruncher before. I'd just ball it up and let 'er rip. I once hit a friend that was watching way off to the side while trying to learn this kinda throw. Funny, but no points.

To be a really good Cornhole player you need to learn the four throws main throws; The slider, blocker, push, and air mail.

  • The slider is landing the bag on the front of the board and sliding it into the hole.
  • The Blocker obviously blocks another player from throwing a slider into the hole.
  • The Push is hit your bag into the hole, or pushing an opponent out of the way.
  • The Air Mail is the slam dunk of Cornhole...high arc right into the hole. Dramatic, but the hardest to pull off.

Now, get out in your backyard, crack a cold one and start practicing! Put a team together and sign up for this year's Budweiser Folds Of Honor Cornhole Tournament Sept. 28.

Oh and one more tip, don't pick me, Steve King, as a partner. You'll have a good time, but you're gonna lose.
