Timber Rattlesnakes Found In Glens Falls
Just when you think 2020 can't get any weirder the rattlesnakes appear.
I know, this sounds crazy, right?
According to a post on the City of Glens Falls Instagram page, two timber rattlesnakes that were spotted in the city have been located and are both now dead.
Both snakes were found near the Glens Falls Cemetery on Bay Street. One was captured alive and passed away in captivity, and the other was found dead on Bay Street after being run over. The New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) did not find any other snakes in the area and is looking into how these snakes got there. While timber rattlesnakes do live in the wild in New York, these particular snakes were found far from "... the nearest known wild rattlesnake population..." and would not have been able to get to where they were found on their own, according to the DEC.
If you do a little research on the timber rattlesnake, you'll learn you do not want to mess with them. According to a fact sheet about the snake on the DEC website, they are "the largest venomous snake in New York" and can reach 4 feet long. And how do you spot one you may ask? They have light color schemes (above) and dark in the photo below, and of course have the signature rattler. The DEC says a bite from the timber can be fatal if left untreated, but also adds "...a rattlesnake will not pursue or attack a person unless threatened or provoked." So if you see one of these bad boys, just keep your distance.
The DEC is asking anyone with info about these snakes to call 1-844-336-3267.
