First Song Played On WGNA – Memories Of 1973
As WGNA prepares to celebrate our 40th anniversary, we'd like to share a fun fact about the very first country song ever played on WGNA.
On December 5, 1973 the first song played on WGNA was 'Country Sunshine' by Dottie West. Ten years earlier, Dottie West made her chart debut and by 1964 earned a Grammy for her performance of 'Here Comes My Baby.' At the time, WGNA was about to go on the air, 'Country Sunshine' was her 31st Billboard Chart hit, peaking at No. 2 in September of 1973. A well-known song amongst country fans and even more popular thanks to its use in television commercials for Coca-Cola, 'Country Sunshine' was the perfect choice to launch WGNA!
