This is my good friend, Mike Schulman. Mike is a die-hard burger guy.  Nothing wrong with that, mind you.  , but I will say that he and Ruth did also very creative alternatives there as well at their Labor Day party.  2 thumbs up!

Don't get me wrong. I like a good old juicy burger as much as the next guy.  We are red-blooded Americans, after all.  But I'm starting to hallucinate at nite, with visions of  packaged chopped meat leaping over fences as I try to get to sleep.

Yes, the hamburger and "tube steak" are the go-to food items on Labor Day weekend.  The Shulman's had their share of them, and I'm sure my brother and sister-in-law will have them when we visit them in New Jersey.

But credit where it is due.  Ruth and Mike had some new and different alternatives on display as well, some being generously provided by other friends at the party.

They had some really nice GREEN alternatives.  I don't mean that they were ecologically Al Gore-ish green.  I mean the color green.  Green salad,  broccoli slaw ( think that's what they called it), and pasta with broccoli.)  I think the other dish was some type of thin oriental styled noodles, but I'm sure I'll be corrected on that one!

They also had delicious chicken as well.  These dishes once again were "pooled resources" from alot of the guests (Dorrie brought the shrimp - not pictured)

If you are looking for a great idea for a very last minute recipe for tomorrow, (and this is a first for me), I will recommend this from hidden valley.com ,  vegetable salad that really looks great. I'm not recommending this because I'm a health nut, by any means.  It's just nice to see something different that's all.

And now my imaginary conversation with Mike, sitting in the chair next to me.

"So Mike, do you like all these alternatives to hamburgers that you had available for your party guests?

What's that, Mike?  --(gasp) "I can't do that to myself!!!!"
