How To Avoid Fines & Replace Your Peeling New York License Plate

Are your license plates peeling or illegible? You could be fined or ticketed.

Check your license plates. New York requires them to be clearly readable. If the numbers are peeling or hard to see, you could get pulled over and even get a ticket or fine.

What Can You Do?

If your plates are peeling but you want to keep your same plate number, you can apply for replacements through the DMV. You’ll need to fill out a form, include a photo of your plates, and mail it in with a $20 check or money order made out to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.

Expect your new plates in about 4 to 6 weeks. Your registration sticker will come separately in the mail.

If you don’t want to keep your old plate number, you can email the DMV to get the next available standard plate at no cost. Include your plate number in the subject line and your name, address, phone number, and a photo of the plate in the email.

Commercial or apportioned plates have a separate process. You’ll need a special form, and you can send it by mail, fax, or email, depending on the instructions. You’ll also need a photo of the plate and should follow DMV guidance or contact them with questions.

What Do I Do With The Old Plates?

Don’t throw your old plates back in the mail or recycle them without destroying them first. Cut them up or mark them clearly so they can’t be used again. If someone misuses your old plates, you could be held responsible for tickets.
