Possible Mumps At Local Middle School
A possible case of the mumps is being investigated by the health department at a local middle school. Maple Avenue Middle School in Saratoga Springs is reporting a possible case of the mumps. According to News Channel 13, the health department is investigating the case. Parents are being asked to monitor their children for any symptoms of the mumps virus through December 10th.
Parents should be looking for symptoms that include fever, headache, muscle ache, fatigue and swollen glands under the ears or jaw on one or both sides of the face. You are urged to contact your pediatrician if you notice any of these symptoms. You should also contact the county health department.
Mumps is a contagious virus and can be spread through coughing, sneezing or sharing utensils, or cups. Because the mumps is viral, antibiotics don't help treat them. The infection has to run its course while trying to relieve the symptoms. In most cases recovery time is about two weeks.
