New Soccer Fields To Be Built Near Northway in Halfmoon

New outdoor sports fields are coming to the Clifton Park-Halfmoon area. It will fill a much-needed void for soccer and lacrosse players in the area.

If you grew up around Halfmoon, you probably remember the Sportsplex of Halfmoon. It was that big indoor facility where so many of us spent weekends playing soccer or cheering on our kids.

There were plans to build outdoor fields along with that complex, but those plans fell through. It’s been years since it closed, but now, it looks like the area could see a new spot for local athletes to gather and play.

The owner of Northway Golf Center, Scott Hoffman, wants to turn land near the longtime driving range into an outdoor athletic complex with four full-sized soccer fields. The project would sit on about 33 acres just north of the driving range, off Exit 8 of the Northway.

Plans show 234 parking spaces with room to add more if needed, plus an access road coming in from Crescent Road near McDonald’s. There’s also an emergency connection that would link to Greenbrier Way. The fields would be built in two phases, starting with the southern two, and sidewalks would connect everything.

According to the Albany Business Review, the land does include about four acres of protected wetlands, so the design will have to work carefully around that. Hoffman said the proposal is still in the early stages, and there’s no confirmed user yet. The fields could host soccer or lacrosse, which are both big in the Halfmoon and Clifton Park area.

It’s been several years since the old Sportsplex plans fell through, but with this new proposal, local athletes may finally have a new home turf again.

Meanwhile, construction continues on the Golf Center’s big expansion, which includes a new clubhouse, restaurant, and more hitting bays.
