A new quick-serve chicken spot is getting ready to land in the Capital Region, adding to what has become a full-blown chicken boom around the area.

The restaurant is set to open January 15th in Troy, continuing a trend that has brought more fast, casual chicken options to local neighborhoods over the past year.

The business is called Gai Chicken (pronounced 'guy') and Rice, and it is opening at 3301 Sixth Ave. Investor Patrick Chiou says the location made sense because he already lives and works in the region as a real estate developer.

He helped bring the brand here when close friends launched it three years ago and felt the Capital Region was ready for something a little different. He believes that if the concept works here, it can work just about anywhere.

The menu is inspired by Thai chicken and rice street food, with steamed or fried chicken served in bowls, platters, salads, and sandwiches, along with seasoned rice and soup.

Chiou says the food is simple and approachable, even for people who usually play it safe when ordering. Being close to RPI should also bring in students looking for quick takeout or delivery.

According to the Albany Business Review, the restaurant is designed mainly for carryout and delivery, with a small footprint and a fast-moving kitchen. Chiou says additional locations could follow in places like downtown Albany, Clifton Park, and Wilton, and the brand is also offering franchise opportunities.

Chicken has clearly become the star of the fast food world locally, with Dave’s Hot Chicken, Chick-fil-A, and Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken and Wings all opening or expanding in the Capital Region recently.

Chiou says what sets this concept apart is its Thai-style preparation, which gives customers something familiar but noticeably different from the usual fried chicken experience.
