Schodack Man Sent Threats, Rammed Vehicle, Then Fled With Child Inside

A Capital Region man is in custody following a wild afternoon on local roadways. Between 4pm and 8pm this individual allegedly threatened to harm someone he knows, threatened to harm himself, attempted to strike another vehicle with his own, fled from police by vehicle and on foot.

On Sunday August 9th, New York State Police of Schodack arrested 30-year-old Shawn M. Latham of Schodack. Here's what happened.

On August 9, 2026, just after 4pm, troopers received a complaint stating the suspect was sending text messages to an individual known to him threatening to harm them and himself. To further complicate things, the suspect had two children in his custody at the time.

At approximately 6:40pm, the suspect followed the victim to the Schodack Police Department parking lot, where the suspect struck the victim's vehicle with his before fleeing the scene. A family member of the victim was able to remove one child from the suspect's vehicle prior to him fleeing, but the second child remained in his car.

After fleeing, the child that remained in the suspect's vehicle was reportedly dropped off with a family member in Averill Park. Shortly after that the suspect was located in the area of State Route 20 and New Road in Schodack.

A second pursuit ended just before 8pm after the suspect lost control of his vehicle and struck an earth embankment. The suspect did attempt to flee on foot while in custody and was transported to Albany Medical Center for injuries sustained during the incident. His arraignment is pending hospital release.
