DMV to Be Holiday Hero for Hundreds of Ex-Upstate NY ‘Shop Rite’ Workers
On Saturday, November 18th, five ShopRite locations officially closed their doors.
After news broke that the date would be moved up from December 9th, store locations in Albany, Colonie, Slingerlands, Niskayuna and North Greenbush officially shut down for the final time. With news of the closings becoming official, it meant that roughly 600 Capital Region employees were now without jobs.
As we move into the holiday season, one organization is set to offer up a source of holiday cheer for these former ShopRite employees. Here's how they're doing it.

New York DMV Steps Up, to Hold Job Fair for Ex-ShopRite Workers in Local Area
A story from WNYT NewsChannel 13 in Albany informed us that the New York Department of Motor Vehicles is looking to recruit former Capital Region ShopRite employees for positions within the DMV.
The report states that motor vehicle representative positions [are] available throughout the agency, and that the DMV held a job fair at their headquarters throughout the day on Monday.

WNYT shared a statement from DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder, who said in-part:
“We are always looking for people who are passionate about customer service, and these people have been on the front lines of the industry." - DMV Commissioner Schroeder via WNYT
At the time, ShopRite shared that sales totals from their Capital Region locations were very low, which is why the locations were being closed. That left hundreds of local area employees out of work, and not for nothing, it did so at the beginning of the holiday season.
Now, the NY DMV is here to help the cause, and that's great news as we head into the holidays.
