My 4-year-old asked if we could make a leaf pile for him to jump in, and just as I was about to say, "Sure!" thinking it would be a lot of fun for him, and maybe me too,  my wife said, "No you can't. He could get ticks."

I didn't think much about it at the time because it seemed reasonable. I mean heck, I don't want my kid getting Lyme Disease! As the days went on since the exchange, however, I started to wonder if I am becoming "That Parent." I never want to be too overprotective of my kids, I want them to live and experience life and yes, make mistakes and learn from them. Isn't that how we all spent our childhoods?

Parenting, I guess, is that never-ending balancing act between what will bring your kids joy and what can hurt them. I have to wonder if I didn't weigh that one out completely. I mean how many leaf piles did me and my friends jump in? I'm still here. I also looked it up and according to one pest expert, it is highly unlikely for there to be any ticks in your leaf pile, especially if you use the leaves from your main yard area and not leaves collected from near the wood-line.

So, I ask you...
