High Fire Risk Across Capital Region Today What You Need To Know
There has been a long stretch of dry conditions throughout the Capital Region, and since the weather today (Thursday, September 4th) is calling for high winds, the New York DEC is asking everyone to use caution.
According to AccuWeather, dry weather, gusty winds, and low humidity are combining to create a higher risk of fire spread across our region. Forecasters say our region is in the Fire Danger Rating Area and at risk, which includes counties from Warren and Saratoga down through Albany, Rensselaer, Columbia, Dutchess, and into parts of Greene and Ulster.
When the air is dry and the winds are strong, even a small spark can quickly turn into a fast-moving fire. That means things we usually don’t think twice about—like tossing a cigarette butt, leaving a campfire smoldering, or even running outdoor machinery could become dangerous under these conditions.
If you live in one of the affected areas, the best thing you can do is take extra care. Avoid burning brush or leaves, keep vehicles off dry grass, and ensure outdoor equipment is in good working order, with no loose chains or sparks.
It is also a good time to double-check that you have a hose or water source nearby if you are grilling or doing any outdoor work.
Wildfires not only threaten property and natural resources, but they also put first responders at risk. Staying mindful and making small adjustments to your routine can go a long way in keeping everyone safe.
