Girls Flag Football Will be Offered in Capital Region Schools
Girls across New York State will now have the opportunity to play football for their school. A pilot program has been created to add another spring sport for girls in our public high schools. They are going to offer a girls' flag football season starting in 2022 selecting a few "Sections" throughout New York state. Section II is included. It will be supported by the region's NFL teams.
According to the Daily Gazette, the NFL will be supporting the program with each New York team partnering up with two sections. there are six sections that have been selected. There are Section II and Section IV which will be supported by the New York Giants, Section VIII, and Section XI will be New York Jets territory, and Section V and Section VI will be supported by the Buffalo Bills. Also, Nike will be on board as a corporate sponsor. The plan is, out of the six sections, to have at least four schools participating. But organizers believe that there will be many more that adopt the pilot program.
Todd Nelson, the NYSPHSAA Assistant Director. who presented the pilot program, said:
From our association’s perspective, we feel that the girls’ opportunities in the fall are numerous — some people say we have too many offerings. If we’re going to move forward and get support from our member schools, it would definitely be a spring sport.
There have been pilot programs done in New Jersey and in the New York City Public Schools and have gone very well with the help of the NY Giants and the NY Jets. The NFL is working very diligently to have girls' flag football in schools across the country.
If all goes well, girls' flag football will be offered in Capital Region public schools in the Spring of 2022.
