Last February one of Alex's friends, Stephen Colvin, was killed in a skiing accident in Maine. Stephen attended Husson University and also played varsity football at the school. What Alex did after the passing of his friend is what makes him this week's "Hometown Hero."

Alex and a few of Steve's friends thought they could help a scholarship Stephen's parents set up in their son's name by organizing a flag football tournament. The tournament was held last month at the Hoosick Falls Central School. Over 30 teams from all over the Capital District showed up to show support and play flag football in Stephen's memory. With the help of Alex, the tournament made $15,000 for his friend's scholarship fund.

Because of Alex's hard work, every year two students will receive $1,000 to help with their college expenses, starting with the Class of 2014.

Stephen's father, Craig Colvin, nominated Alex because the "whole community is very proud of Alex for what he has done and for such a good cause." Craig also is thankful to Alex because his work with the scholarship fund "helps the healing process, knowing that some good could come from such a tragic loss."

As part of the “Hometown Heroes” series, we’ve partnered with County Waste, Latham Ford, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Capital Region and Awards by Walsh to celebrate local unsung heroes for their good deeds and honorable work. Thank you, Alex, for all that you do!
