The cost depends on the type of plate you want. A standard college or university plate has an initial fee of $60. After that, there is an annual fee of $31.25, which is added to your regular registration renewal cost. This option is the most popular for those who want to keep things simple but still represent their school.

For drivers who want something a little more personal, the DMV also offers customized versions. You can add up to six characters, including spaces, to create a plate that is uniquely yours. The initial fee for a personalized plate is $91.25, with an annual fee of $62.50.
