The past few years have been defined by Artificial Intelligence. ChatGPT, CoPilot, MetaAI, and more have made their way into every facet of human life, making avoiding the technology more of a hassle than actually using it.

Obviously, schools have begun to see issues. Teachers have realized their students are relying on the technology for everything, from homework to exams. What's the answer? Two Capital Region schools may have found it.

Greater Amsterdam School District

The GASD was the first to implement new AI regulations in the Capital Region. They understand the risks involved with AI usage, and have tried to create a silver lining. For students, AI can be used, but only with explicit permission from staff. The generated content must be cited properly, and any unauthorized or uncited use will lead to disciplinary action.

For teachers, AI can be used to develop curriculum, assess student performance, and assist with administrative work, but cannot take over the role of actually teaching the students.

Guilderland Central School District

Just a few days after GASD announced their new policies, GCSD followed suit. Instead of just putting new policy into place, Guilderland is implementing an entirely new program, known as MagicSchool AI.

The program works with both students and teachers to safely implement AI into their classes, and will require an extensive "Ethics of AI" course to be completed before use. First and foremost, though, the school district will focus on AI safety education, and ensuring that the technology works as a tool for the students and staff, rather than a straight-up answer.

Canadian Pacific Holiday Train Rolls Through The Capital Region For a Great Cause

It had been three years since the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train rolled through the Capital Region. It made three stops; Mechanicville, Saratoga Springs, and Fort Edward. The first was Mechanicville on a rainy Sunday night. This is where I enjoyed the festive holiday train. They are traveling across the country to 106 stops. At each stop, they play live music and collect donations for the local food banks. Country Artist Lindsay Ell was the musical entertainment and she was awesome. The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train also presented the Mechanicville Community Center with a check for $3500 to help restock the food bank. Even though the weather wasn't ideal, a couple of hundred families joined the fun.
