Whoever said New York was nothing but rude is wrong: these Upstate New York cities and towns prove otherwise!

When I grew up in the shadow of New York City, I totally understood where the image of 'New York is rude' came from. The hustle and bustle of everyday life in the shadow of the Big Apple just kind of creates a need to be short with everything. Time is short, so sometimes there just isn't time for pleasantries.

That said, I never understood why that image gets applied to the state as a whole. Life Upstate, in the Southen Tier, in Western New York, or anywhere outside of the New York City metro area is just a step more relaxed. Because of that, everyone is a little less stressed and busy, and nicer to each other!

That friendliness goes above and beyond in the 5 Upstate New York cities and towns below. They are beautiful places to live (3 of them are waterfront locales!), with lots of fun stuff to do, and the mood of their residents is a great reflection of both!
