A horrible accident on the Northway Sunday morning took the life of a senior at Guilderland High School. Shortly before 5am Sunday morning, a car being driven by 18 year old Megi Hamza broke down in the northbound center lane right before the Twin Bridges.

State Police say the 2006 Toyota Corolla was stopped when a tractor trailer driver saw she had broken down. The driver stopped in the right lane along side her and put on his caution lights, presumably to warn other drivers. Another driver in a Chevy Tahoe coming up the Northway and changed lanes to avoid the tractor trailer, but did not see Hamza's car in the center lane and crashed into the back of it. Both Hamza and the driver of the Chevy Tahoe were taken to Albany Med where Hamza died from her injuries. The driver of the Tahoe was also injured but is expected to be ok.

Guilderland Superintendent of Schools Marie Wiles said in a statement on the school's website Sunday night:

Megi will be remembered as warm and friendly, with a sweet disposition. Always positive and smiling, she lit up any room she was in. Many students were fortunate to call Megi their friend. She touched many lives at GHS and will truly be missed.

Wiles also said social workers, psychologists and grief counselors would be on hand throughout the day Monday to talk to students and staff looking for help in dealing with the situation.
