Thomas Rhett: ‘The Adoption Process Is an Emotional Roller Coaster’
Thomas Rhett and his wife, Lauren, are adding two babies to their family in 2017; one biological and the other, an adopted child from Africa.
Preparing for one child — let alone two — is a strenuous task, but at a recent No. 1 party for his latest singles "Star of the Show" and "T-Shirt," Rhett acknowledged how the adoption process has added an extra level of difficulty to the couple's preparation.
“The process of adopting someone from a different country is really, really strenuous and you find out a lot about yourself," the singer admits. "You know when you’re over there and you and your wife are staying in a hotel room for a month and a half and you wake up and you think you’re going to get some news and you don’t get it, or you don’t think you’re going to get some news and you do get it and that’s really the best way I can describe the adoption process is an emotional roller coaster."
According to Rhett, the process is moving very slowly, and though his wife is expected to give birth in August, the arrival of their adopted child is still unknown. However, the two are keeping a positive attitude.
"In the end, you know, all of it is for a good thing and you just have to realize that you’re adopting a human being," Rhett continues. "So you know that those people that are going to let her into your care, they want to know that you really are a standup person and that you can support this child. And so I understand how tough they make it for you to see how bad you really want it, but it is very hard. But we’re, you know, we’re finally over that hump and cannot wait to get our child home.”
The couple plans to give their new children family names, but have yet to settle on them.
