That Time a Giant Head Came Out of the Hudson River
It was April 2013, the Marist College Crew Team was out practicing in the Poughkeepsie area of the Hudson River. Team members spotted, what they thought was, an odd looking rock. But this rock was floating.
Turns out, it was a head. A very large head. In fact, it took ten people to get it out of the water. It looked like a something that would have represented a Greek sculpture, although made from styrofoam and fiberglass, reinforced with steel rods.
The head stands about seven feet tall.
So where did it come from? Some speculated it was displaced from a Mardi Gras float and somehow made its way north. Others thought it was a theater prop. Turns out, the head has had quite a journey. It was originally used as a display at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City. It was auctioned off to a junk yard, where a New Jersey couple, who seemed have an affinity for odd collectibles, bought it. It sat in their backyard for a number of years until they decided to move to the Delaware County town of Meredith, NY. In Meredith it sat on top of a hill called Irish Hill.
Sometime around 2005 though, the head disappeared from the hill and hadn't been seen since. That is until 2013 when it surfaced in the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie. How it got there is still very much a mystery.
There were reports in June of 2013 that the head went missing from Marist College. No official word on where it is now.
