NY Man, MA Woman Lost Lives in Thruway Rollover Crash In Albany
Grim Update on Thruway Crash
A sad update to a major story here in the Capital Region, as news comes from the New York State Police that two people perished in the horrific rollover crash on Thursday morning.
According to a press release by the NYSP, the investigation determined that a tractor-trailer traveling northbound struck the concrete barrier separating northbound from southbound traffic.
The collision, according to the New York State Police, "caused the tractor-trailer to overturn onto a northbound passenger vehicle. The driver of the tractor-trailer and a passenger of the other car were transported to Albany Medical Center."
Two People Sadly Lost Their Lives
The report stated that the passenger in the tractor-trailer, Sabrina D. Bermudez, 50, of Ludlow, MA, and the driver of the other vehicle, Paul Kelley, 64, of Rockville Centre, NY, succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
The vehicle passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged. The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered severe injuries and remained in stable but critical condition at the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing.

Severe Crash Halts I87 Traffic
This morning, our thoughts are with the passengers inside the vehicles and the first responders who rushed to the scene after a severe crash was reported on the NYS Thruway in Albany. This is a developing story; we hope to have more information as the day continues.
Dramatic photos show what appears to be a tractor-trailer on its side blocking all lanes of traffic on the NYS Thruway between exits 23 and 24 in Albany. Detours are in place, and all exits northbound on the Northway are closed.
"I-87/NYS Thruway northbound from Exit 23 to 24 in Albany will remain CLOSED for investigation of a serious injury crash. Detours are in place. Seek alternate routes if possible." - New York State Police
Rush Hour Comes to a Halt
According to the New York State Thruway Authority, the crash happened around 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning. Many exits were closed almost immediately, including all northbound traffic on I87.
First responders with the Albany Permanent Professional Firefighters Association Local 2007 posted an image from the crash, adding that "companies are operating on a multi-vehicle collision with entrapment on the NYS Thruway near exit 23 in both the east and westbound lanes."
They also reported that first responders deal with "heavy entrapment with hazardous materials issues."
