Scotty McCreery to Pay Former Manager Following Legal Dispute
Order in the court! 'American Idol' winner Scotty McCreery has been in a long and consuming legal dispute with his former manager, Todd Cassetty, but a jury ruled Wednesday (June 18) that the 'See You Tonight' hitmaker must pay up.
Cassetty, a music industry veteran, sued McCreery last year. He argued that he was owed 15 percent (industry standard) of the singer's revenue and fought for the back pay accrued over five months. The case finally went to trial this week, and it was decided that McCreery must pay Cassetty $239,329, according to the Tennessean.
McCreery, 20, was managed by 19 Entertainment after winning 'American Idol' in 2011, but hired Cassetty as his manager in 2012. Unfortunately, they never finalized a written agreement, and their working relationship ended in April 2013.
According to the lawsuit, Cassetty had not been compensated since they parted ways. During the trial, emails from McCreery were read, with the singer quoted as saying, "I will make sure you get a large 15% touring check from FBMM this month.” However, once the pair's professional relationship ended, McCreery only offered 2%. Judy McCreery, the singer's mother, was named as defendant in the case, as she makes most of her son's business decisions and controls many of his affairs.
In a statement to Taste of Country, the country singer expressed that he is actually pleased with the outcome of the case, rather than disappointed.
"I am very pleased with the management fee ruling of only $239,000, which was less than half of the $570,000 Mr. Cassetty requested," McCreery says. "It was always my intention to pay Mr. Cassetty and indeed had offered to pay him more than once. His request, however, for over half a million dollars was too much for a few months of work."
Above all else, the young star is hopeful he'll be able to move past the negativity this has caused.
"While it has been difficult to risk having my reputation challenged, I always believed that the truth would prevail, and it has," McCreery concludes. "I have a management team, including a professional business manager, in Nashville advising me. Now I am happy to put this behind me and focus on my music. As always, I am thankful to my fans for all of their support."
The singer released 'See You Tonight' in 2013.
