NY State & Local Police Announce Crackdown For Holiday Weekend

If you are hitting the road for Columbus Day weekend, be extra vigilant as you navigate New York roadways.

Governor Hochul announced a statewide coordinated effort was kicking off Thursday between local and state police for the upcoming holiday weekend "...cracking down on speeding and impaired motorists." The heightened patrols will roll through Tuesday, October 12th.

Law enforcement will increase DWI checkpoints through the weekend, and will also be locking in on distracted drivers using electronic devices while driving. During a similar campaign over Columbus Day Weekend in 2020, more than 40,000 tickets were issued.

This isn't the only traffic safety initiative that is underway in the state. The Governor also recently signed a bill that will implement "speed monitoring systems" in construction/work zones to catch speeders via photos. These camera systems would allow officials to better enforce special speed limits through work zones.

Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.
