New York Yankees To Celebrate Jerry Garcia’s 80th Birthday
The New York Yankees will jump on the bandwagon of Major League Baseball teams, along with many minor league teams, in celebrating the late rock n' roll legend Jerry Garcia and his band, the Grateful Dead. The Pinstripes will join the San Francisco Giants, Garcia's hometown team, the Boston Red Sox and the Cincinnati Reds in such celebrations during the 2022 season.
On August 1st, which would have been the guitarist's 80th birthday, the New York Yankees and the Jerry Garcia Family are selling a special ticket to 1000 fans that will include a Jerry Garcia bobblehead. A portion of every ticket sold will support the Rex Foundation.
Garcia died 27 years ago, succumbing to addiction like so many. However, his music and the joy that it has brought millions lives on. His bandmates Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart still tour with Dead & Company, along with pop-music star, John Mayer. MLB teams are taking advantage of that continued popularity. Here are some of the giveaways.
The Boston Red Sox have done several Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead nights and gave away a really nice Jerry hat in 2021.
The San Francisco Giants have been doing Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead nights for decades at this point. The band originated from the Haight/Ashbury district of the city and several band members, including Garcia, were casual fans of the team.
The Cincinnati Reds even get in on the action. Instead of paying players, the Reds try to entice fans with promotions. As far as the Yankees August 1st promotion is concerned, HERE is a link and information from the Yankees and The Jerry Garcia family: "the first 1,000 fans who purchase through this offer will receive an exclusive New York Yankees Jerry Garcia Bobblehead. Please note that you must purchase a Special Event Ticket in order to have access to this exclusive offer. Item Pickup: Once inside the Stadium, please head over to the Bobblehead redemption table located on the Field Level (100 Level) next to Gate 2 up to 60 minutes after the originally scheduled first pitch." Wave that flag with Jerry Garcia and the New York Yankees.
