Luke Bryan Reaches Out to 5-Year-Old Cancer Patient Before She Dies
Luke Bryan helped to make the final days of a brave young cancer patient much more special.
Lila May Schow was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma at the age of 2, and inspired her hometown of Hood River, Ore. with her fight. Doctors told her mother, Heidi Hall, that her body was too weak to continue treatment in July, and her family set about making her final days as special as they could possibly be, throwing her a lavish celebration-of-life birthday party in August, spending a week in Hawaii and naming her the princess of their town.
The brave little girl's final wish was to dance onstage with her favorite country star, Bryan, and when the superstar got wind of that fact, he reached out to help make it come true.
"Luke personally called Lila and talked to her and her family," family friend Jenny Brown-Lorenzen tells People. "They were so very impressed."
Bryan also recorded a special video message for Lila and arranged for her and her family to get VIP tickets to an upcoming concert.
"Luke was also going to have Lila sing her favorite song, 'That's My Kind of Night' with him on stage," Lorenzen adds. "It would have been priceless."
Tragically, Lila won't get that chance. She was placed on hospice care in early September and passed away on Saturday (Sept. 12).
"My heart is shattered into a million pieces," her mother posted to Facebook. "There is no pain on earth that is worse than this. The world will never be the same without her beautiful face here with us."
Though she didn't get to dance on stage with Bryan, Lila's family are grateful to him for all that he did.
"Lila's family was so touched by Luke's genuine support and compassion," Lorenzen shares. "It meant so much to them."
