New York residents call New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officials fearing a bird could be injured or dying in their pool.

New York residents in Suffolk County contacted DEC officials after witnessing a bird, that had landed in their children's pool, not eat or fly away after a few days. The concern was that this particular bird could be injured and in need of care. Turns out that wasn't the case at all.

On Monday June 23rd, DEC Officer Francis responded to a call of an injured cormorant in the town of Babylon, NY. A cormorant is an aquatic bird that might have seen diving into and under water to catch fish for food. They typically spend their time on lakes, rivers and, in this case, a child's pool.

Officer Francis learned that the cormorant had been in a resident’s small swimming pool for approximately three days without anyone seeing it eat or attempt to leave. Officer Francis safely captured the bird and transported it to a local wildlife rehabilitator for an evaluation and treatment.

DEC checked in with the rehabilitator and learned that the cormorant was released approximately four days later at the Venetian Shores Park boat launch in Babylon. The rehabilitator stated the bird was uninjured. So why was it in a child's pool?

According to reports, the bird had simply landed in the small backyard pool mistakenly, and was good to go after a few meals. Reminds me of my grandmother when she mistakes another Honda CRV for her own in the grocery store parking lot.
