Is That Really National Grid? Scammers Getting More Brazen-BEWARE

We are all aware of certain kinds of scammers. Most of the time it is a phone call from a number you don't recognize or worse a number from a police department asking for money and personal information. The scammers are getting more brazen. The latest involves a face-to-face encounter with "National Grid".

I saw a post on the NextDoor app from a neighbor in Saratoga County warning others of a National Grid scam. The NextDoor app is a great resource for useful information and I am glad I saw this one. He stated that he had a face-to-face encounter with a scammer.

National Grid warns of imposters coming to your door trying to gain entry to get vital information from you. They say to always ask for identification and that their employees are required to show it and identify themselves. This person on the NextDoor app did just that.

The scammer did display identification but he said, in the post,

...girl was sporting a National Grid ID and a copy of a generic bill talking about getting you credits for the fees you have been paying for solar farms.

He said that she was walking the neighborhood around 7 pm and based on the time of day and that her ID badge looked like it was made at Staples were red flags. He also knew that National Grid DOES NOT go door-to-door. They may also ask you for a copy of your bill or to look at your bill online.

The aware neighbor called the police and he stated that they were going around in other neighborhoods. When the police arrived they rounded up three scammers in the area.

Make sure you are on high alert and know that even if they have ID, it still doesn't make them legit. National Grid urges you to never give out your information and to call them directly if you have any concerns.
