How the Heck Did They Build Albany’s Most Unusual Landmark?
I know it's called "The Egg", but personally I always thought it looked more like a bowl.
When construction started in 1966 on the Northeast corner of the Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza I'm sure a lot of residents thought the architects and developers had totally lost it. 12-years later it was finished and the end result was pretty amazing. Now, I couldn't imagine the Albany skyline without that weirdly beautiful concert venue.
The band, They Might Be Giants, even wrote a song about The Egg. It's actually titled, "Albany", but everyone calls it The Egg Song. The band wrote it on the way to play at The Egg in 2004.
Here are some great old photos and fun facts from the construction of Albany's most famous, and weirdest, structure.
