Here are some fun unique events that are happening across New York state this summer. It's all taking place along the Erie Canal. You can take part in many different excursions depending on which part of the Erie Canal you venture out to.

In an effort to boost local businesses and promote the cities that will host these "On the Canals" adventures, The New York Power Authority and Canal Corporation are holding free recreational programs throughout the summer according to News 10 ABC. You can experience all of the New York State Erie Canal system and the Empire State Trail.

Governor Cuomo's Reimagine the Canals program called "On the Canals" will offer six free outdoor excursions in the cities along the canal including Medina, Macedon, Waterloo, Savannah, and Amsterdam.

The governor said of the initiative:

The ‘On the Canals’ excursion program, part of our Reimagine the Canals initiative, will breathe new life into the Canal system, inviting both residents and visitors to kayak, bike, and fish along our historic waterways. I encourage all New Yorkers to come out and celebrate the natural beauty of our State’s Canals and support our local canalside communities and economies.

The hope is to build on the "NY Canal Staycations" program that was offered last year. It included kayaking on the Erie Canal and biking on the Empire State Trail. The new program will also include other activities like birding tours, hydro biking, and fishing.

The itinerary for the "On the Canals" in Amsterdam is a kayak and bike adventure which is a trip between Port Jackson and the historic Yankee Hill Lock. To see other cities and adventures click HERE.
