Facebook: How You Can Tell If You’ve Been Cloned
It's been spreading like wildfire on Facebook. Were you hacked? Is your information safe? Is there a clone of you out there? Hopefully, I can explain it a little bit so you know what to look for and whether you should be worried or not.
You've probably been seeing people posting on Facebook something along the lines of "I didn't make a new page, if I friend request you, it's not me" or, like a message I got in Facebook Messenger,
Hi….I actually got another friend request from you yesterday…which I ignored so you may want to check your account. Hold your finger on the message until the forward button appears…then hit forward and all the people you want to forward too….I had to do the people individually. Good Luck!
Even though you've been seeing it everywhere, chances are you're fine and haven't been cloned or hacked and please don't spread it and forward it to your friends.
What makes a clone different is that people aren't just stealing your information, in theory, they're copying your page and then re-friending your friends in hopes that they accept and will give money or information of some kind in the future. Still worried? Luckily, there's an easy way to check if you've been cloned. Use Snopes' advice and search for your name on Facebook, are you the only you? Chances are then, you're safe.
Overall, Facebook told WSYR that there was no increase in cloned accounts and this has nothing to do with the recent breach and that message is a fake.
