Apparently it is illegal to be buried with your pet in New York. Lawmakers are working on changing that.

I can imagine this has come up before. Someone passes away, and their wish is to be buried with the remains of their pet. At this point, this is actually ILLEGAL in the state of New York! But lawmakers are working on changing that.

According to Channel 6, the state legislature has passed a bill allowing people to be buried with the cremated remains of a pet. This applies to cats, dogs or other domesticated animals. This law would not apply to religious cemeteries, and it would ultimately be the decision of the cemetery to allow this practice. The next step is for Governor Cuomo to review.

First, who knew you could not do this? I thought you could pretty much be buried with anything you wanted, and the cremated remains of a beloved pet seem to be pretty harmless.

Second, I can imagine this is a popular request when people move on to the next world. People get buried with all kinds of stuff, why not bring that beloved dog or cat who provided so much companionship? I can also imagine this request has already been fulfilled many times over without anyone knowing. I mean, honestly, how do you monitor this!  At least now it will be legal! :)
