Buck’s Second Chance To Win A World Championship In New York
Thursday night, Buck Showalter will take the helm as manager for a New York based Major League team for the first time since 1995, when he was the manager of the New York Yankees. That year, Showalter led the Bronx Bombers to the American League Division Series against the Seattle Mariners.

The fourth year skipper, at the time, had his team in a commanding position with a 2-0 lead in the best of 5 game series. Then the series moved to Seattle for the final 3 games, if necessary. Showalter's team needed just one win to go to the American League Championship Series. The Mariners had a .630 winning percentage at home that year and a .458 on the road.
Three games later featuring two appearances by Seattle's Hall of Fame hurler, Randy Johnson and Buck Showalter and the New York Yankees were going home. A few weeks later, Buck was fired after he rejected a George Steinbrenner contract offer. Showalter, at 4 years, had the longest continuous stint as manager of the Yankees under Steinbrenners first 23 years as owner.
Almost 27 years later, Buck Showalter takes the helm of a different New York team, a very good one. Showalter will certainly have the talent and resources to win a World Series. The Mets are one of the top seven teams picked by odds-makers at +1400 to win the World Series. The Yankees are +1200. Don't think that old Buck wouldn't like to stick it to his old employer in the Bronx and he'll have more than a chance.
With Max Scherzer, (potentially in June) Jacob deGrom, Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte, Pete Alonso, Eduardo Escobar, Brandon Nimmo, Chris Bassitt and Jeff McNeil at the core for Showalter's Mets, this team can't ever be counted out. A 2022 World Series Championship could be in the cards for Buck Showalter, 27 years after he was unceremoniously let go by the Yankees and replaced by Joe Torre. The rest is history and Buck's new chapter starts Thursday.
