I first moved to Upstate New York right when autumn was picking up. At that time, I couldn't go twenty minutes without someone telling me that I had to try an Apple Cider Doughnut.
These things sounded like god's gift to earth the way people were talking about them, but were they really worth the hype, or is an entire region of the northeast just blinded by their loyalty to them?
It's Not Always Great...
Amidst all of these raving reviews, I obviously had to try one of the northeast's most treasured delicacies, and you know what I thought? Meh.
Now before you chase me down the streets with torches and pitchforks, let me explain myself. I didn't have a fresh, hot out of the oven, doughnut. It was just one from behind the case at a restaurant, and all I could think was "wow, this is really what everyone was hyping up?"
It wasn't bad, but it wasn't insane, and I felt let down.
...but When it is, It's Excellent
My first year here, I had nothing but mid-to-okay doughnuts, and it led me to believe that yes, they're overhyped.
That all changed a few weeks ago when I took a visit to Golden Harvest with my girlfriend's family. They were just as angry as I'm sure you are when they heard my take, and were determined to prove me wrong.
I'm happy to say: I was wrong. I went through an entire half-dozen of those in under an hour.
Final thoughts? When they're good, they're okay, but when they're fresh, out of the oven, they're unbelievable.
What's your take? Are these sweets overrated or are people simply not having the right batch? Let us know on the app below!
