New York’s Capital Region has seen a huge number of restaurant closings in 2022. Post-pandemic business has put a strain on many eateries, not to mention the economic problems of inflation and the supply chain. Whether it’s the stress of running on smaller staff or the financial burden, many have chosen to hang up the apron and turn off the lights.

Only days ago, popular Downtown Troy coffee shop The Daily Grind announced it will close its doors for good after 38 years of business. Now another Troy coffee shop has put out a Facebook post saying that it will be closing by the end of the month, and fans are heartbroken.

Which Troy Coffee Shop Is Closing Down?

Troy, NY coffee shop Spill'n the Beans is closing after 19 years.

Spill’n the Beans Coffeehouse and Bistro will stop serving as of October 31. The café has been on 3rd Street for 19 years, but the owners say a labor shortage and pandemic-tied food costs were just too much.

The owners also expressed frustrations about a disagreement with their landlord. The coffee shop had been operating all summer with a faulty air conditioning unit, but Spill’n and their lessor couldn’t agree on a proper solution that worked for both parties.

The owners say Spill’n the Beans will still exist in a smaller capacity. They plan to finish the Troy Riverfront Farmer’s Market season through the end of the month and then return in the Spring.

Spill’n’s owners say that if you have a gift card, make sure to use it before the 31st. Check their social media accounts before going, though; they’ll run on limited hours with a modified menu until close.

You Can Rent New York's Largest AirBnb For $343

There are currently two options for those wanting to use the 850 acre Vanderkamp Estate: The Frank Soule Lodge and The Boathouse.

The Frank Soule Lodge is named after the original property owner who used the estate as his personal escape from the world of industry. The Airbnb listing includes seven bedrooms for multiple families or lot of friends and has a shuffleboard room, large kitchen, outdoor fire pit, and a private dock. The Lodge is $800 per night.

The real bargain is The Boathouse. 200 feet away from the Lodge, The Boathouse has its own private dock (with personal canoe, it is a boathouse after all), an outdoor fireplace and two bedrooms facing the water. Airbnb lists it as $343 per night.

The 850 acres is shared between Lodge and Boathouse guests, but if you can’t find a place far enough away from other people within the 1.3 square mile grounds you may have more problems than a weekend retreat is going to solve.

Both retreats are pretty solidly booked through the summer, but have good availability in the fall. As you can see by some of the pictures, this place has to be completely spectacular when the leaves change. Definitely something to look into Oswego County for. Check it out!
