Albany’s Winter Weather: The Trend Of Milder Winters Continues
In the past, it seemed as if we would get a cold and snowy Capital Region winter. However, lately, the winter months seem more mild than usual. The winter of 2024 is trending to be one of the warmest on record.
What are the average temperatures of a Capital Region winter that makes it the warmest on record? When have we had these mild winters? Are they happening more frequently?
This graph illustrates the mean (average) temperature from December 1st through February 18th at the Albany International Airport from 1940 through 2024. Although this looks like an EKG, you can see that winter weather in Albany, NY has had its extremes. It does appear that our winters are trending warmer.
This chart lists the top ten warmest winters on record for Albany, NY and you can see that this winter (2024) will be the most mild average temperature to date.
These temperatures listed above don't seem to be very warm but when you take into consideration that these are average winter temperatures, it's a bit concerning. Also, last year (2023) came in as the third warmest winter on record.
