Albany’s Very Own Taste of History With the USS Slater
It seems like some of us forget about some of the cool stuff there is to do right in our own backyard. In an earlier blog, I mention a few places that you can go for a local day trip, around the Albany area.
This is one that I almost forgot about. It’s the USS Slater, and it’s actually a museum. It’s docked from April to November at the snow dock, just south of the Dunn Memorial Bridge, in downtown Albany. We have our WGNA Party Cruses right next door on the Dutch Apple, and every time I go to our cruises, I see the Slater and get the reminder that I should go on one of their tours.
I was on it a while back with my son, Jayson, but it’s one of those things that should be done a few times. After all, it was part of World War II.
The tour guides know the ship inside and out and this includes information on the guns and weapons on board. It has had an extensive renovation to restore the ship to its former glory.
The hour long tours are given every Wednesday through Sunday from10 a.m. – 4 p.m. There is a slight fee to take the tour, but it is well worth it. Have you ever taken the tour of the USS Slater?
