State boxing and education officials have announced a new pilot program to help prepare professional and amateur boxers in New York for careers outside the ring.

The new program is called "Fight For Your Future". It includes educational opportunities to get high school equivalency diplomas, enroll in college programs and win scholarships. The idea is to provide boxers with a chance to get a college education like athletes have in other sports in order to allow them to better compete in today's economic environment.

To qualify, a boxer must be a New York State resident and active in the sport. Pros and amateurs need a valid license or requisite identification credential. There are over 400 pro boxers in the State and over 1,400 amateurs.
